2020 'Long Road' Riesling
Nesting Place: The Long Road
As has been the case historically, "The Long Road" has been a reference to vineyard & grower relationships that have uncertain futures or longevity. In this case, our "long road" has come to an end. Although we have been making Riesling within the Black Swift portfolio since 2014 & always from East Kelowna, this expression is an exceptional one-off. Perched on an intensive North-West facing slope in East Kelowna, this block is defined by deep Sandy loam interspersed with gravel deposits, the ground between rows is covered in Morel Mushrooms seasonally. Positioning and soil are conducive to truly correct expressions Riesling (correctness being debatable of course).
The Wine & Moment in Time:
To be the one & only, is a beautiful yet devastating thing. Being the first expression of Riesling born of this vineyard, it has certainly left a hell of a first impression. The youth of the Riesling vines seems to have yielded a juicy Tangerine or Key-Lime fueled tipple, still nodding towards to more mineral expectations in a subtle way. Absolutely Electric in nature of acidity.
In an experimental fashion, this was fermented in Stainless Steel & aged Sur Lee over the course of 1 full year. The hope being to amplify texture & weight even in its youth.
We build Riesling to run, for however long you may feel inclined. If it is the Diesel, Kerosene or Petrol spectrum you seek...Drink through 2030.
