2016 'Desert Valley Vineyards' Cabernet Franc
Nesting Place: Desert Valley Vineyard
Perched on a remarkable Western slope of the Golden Mile Bench, allowing for ample sun exposure. Desert Valley is not only a testament to the magic of the sub-appellation, but our investment in the relationship with our wine-growers. It really is a very extended family business. The site is defined by ribbons of clay, sand & intermittent mineral deposits from erosion on the nearby mountains. Not only does the Desert Valley microclimate amplify ripeness & concentration, the intensive swings between daytime & evening temperatures breed balance structurally.
The Wine & Moment in Time:
This vintage of Cabernet Franc marks the 4th of its kind by name within the Black Swift Portfolio. Between the collaborative nature of the vineyard relationship & the conditions brought forth by the site/ vintage, this may be the most elegant expression to date. 2016 captures the structural heft & weight Cab. Franc is capable of whilst still showcasing a diverse range of savory notes synonymous with the grape. Presently, this wine leans towards concentrated Dark Berry-Fruit, Dried Dates & a cooling Menthol-esque edge.
To support the raw power of the fruit, this expression of Franc was aged over the course of 31 months in a selection of 5 entirely new French Oak barrels.
As alluded to above; this hulk of a wine offers immediate promise, but is truly built to run the gamut of time. Drink now through 2030.
