BSV 2019 Pinot Blanc
Nesting Place: Hatch Home AKA BSV
A great bit of irony here, this was hatched...at the hatch home farm, here in West Kelowna. Although this vineyard is physically home to our beloved hatch; since the inception of this renegade operation we have referred to the site as "Black Swift Vineyards" which now exists separately, a truly cyclical conundrum. 16ish acres planted intermittently between 1985-1997 to: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir & Gamay in descending order. The vineyard is defined by clay & intermittent mineral/larger rock deposits from Mt. Boucherie's erosion. From a climatic perspective, this vineyard is planted with an exceptional selection of varietals logical to the location.
The Wine & Moment in Time:
In the theme of irony, the 2019 Pinot Blanc the 1st of its kind. As much as Pinot Blanc has always been integral to our identity & winemaking program, it perpetually was the driving force of other wines, not a singular expression. Based on vineyard maturity, there is a pre-existing condition towards concentration of the fruit characteristics. We have made strides towards capturing the organic vibrancies Pinot Blanc is capable of, yet also showcasing its textural potential.
The dominant portion saw; slow, cold fermentation in Stainless, while 2 French Oak vessels (a puncheon, a barrique) saw a sliding scale of 9 months barreled down. One, both fermented & aged, whilst the other was simply aged over the same course of time. All components were then blended together as a cohesive composition.
Well, it can honestly be said that this is presently absolutely magnificent. If inclined, drink through 2025...get a little weird, you know?
