2014 'Monarch Vineyard' Syrah
Nesting Place: Monarch Vineyards
Nestled in the majesty & wonder of the East Osoyoos Bench, Monarch vineyard produces iconic & noteworthy incarnations of red-wine. This site lays on the lower plateau/Osoyoos Bench flats, while not technically recognized as a distinguished sub-appellation, Monarch is worthy of its royal reference in moniker. Planted to Cab. Sauv, Cab. Franc & Syrah & defined by rich, Sand based soil. Our relationship here runs as deep, if not deeper than the soil its self. Regardless of vintage, the site absolutely bakes in the desert sun, breeding brooding/seriously meaty expressions of fruit.
The Wine & Moment in Time:
The first expression of Syrah born of Monarch by name, not the first expression of Syrah of the vineyard for us by a long shot. 2014 by nature was an exceptional growing year. Defined by early growth/spring, a continually hot & long summer balanced with cooler evening temperatures. If there were a proverbial check-list, the boxes have indeed been filled in '14. The metaphorical cup overflows with intensely ripened & well-structured expressions of wine. This Syrah defies categorization in the sense of not being overtly juicy/extracted NOR is it solely defined by meatiness or earthen & spice character. The '14 Monarch encapsulates the full potential of expression from the vineyard & varietal.
Time has softened the edges and rounded this tannic hulk into a pocket of rugged finesse. Expressive of the Blueberry compote, Cracked-Black Pepper, Molasses & Slow Jams. Initially softened via 20 months in 2/3 New American Oak, 1/3 Older American Oak barrels.
As long as your little heart allows darling. Let ride through 2030.
